INTRODUCTORY BACKGROUND
1.A Pilot Telepathology Project using Whole-Slide-Imaging (WSI) for
Hematopathology Consultation at The Cancer Center in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (BVUB)
·
The COVID pandemic opened our eyes to the
possibilities of remote consultation
·
Our
pilot project provided
a comprehensive telepathology
consult
solution to improve quality of hematopathology
diagnosis at the Cancer Center in Ho Chi
Minh City,
Vietnam (BVUB) since May 2022
·
We
have organized a monthly virtual meeting between BVUB Pathology Laboratory and
a Hematopathology faculty at UT Health McGovern Medical School, Houston, TX
·
2
to 5 difficult cases at BVUB are selected for teleconsultation each month
·
The
H&E and IHC slides are scanned into WSIs by a variety of scanners:
(a) Ventana iScan Coreo (Roche)
(b) Ventana DP200 (Roche)
(c) VS120 Virtual Slide Microscope (Olympus)
·
The WSIs are posted online to be previewed by
the hematopathologist at UT
Health McGovern Medical School
with Pathpresenter, a web-based WSI viewer
·
Virtual meeting is facilitated through Zoom
·
Discussion between BVUB Pathology Laboratory staff and the
hematopathologist at UT Health McGovern Medical School is carried out to get a
consensus on the most likely
diagnosis for each case
·
If further data are needed, an action plan is
suggested to obtain further test results for further discussion (in email or in
follow-up meeting) for timely patient management

2.Using this web site for learning/teaching
hematopathology with WSI case studies
·
A
case with a known diagnosis can be selected from the list
·
Upon
going to the selected case, the following will be shown:
-Clinical history, including pertinent H&P findings, lab results and
imaging findings
-Pathpresenter links to WSIs which include H&E
slides and IHC slides; some also include lab results and flow cytometry
scattergrams
-Summary of findings that are found from the Pathpsenter
links above
-A diagnosis that has been obtained by consensus between BVUB Pathology
Laboratory staff and the hematopathologist at UT Health McGovern Medical School
-Suggestion as needed for further IHCs, lab tests, or clinical data to clarify
the diagnosis
